Petit ELJ Caloundra is located within a beautiful community. It offers a high-quality play-based learning program based on current pedagogies and inspired by a strong partnership and collaboration with our families.
Educators form strong relationships with our children and our families to ensure they have a deep understanding of each child and their interests. This allows educators to design and implement an active learning cycle with a strong emphasis on the interests of both groups and individuals making for a more engaging learning environment.
Sharon NelsonCentre Director
Hi, I’m Sharon Nelson, Centre Director of Petit ELJ Caloundra.
I am passionate about working with children and their families in the early years of their life.
I believe it is important to provide children with quality care and education, setting them up for a journey of lifelong learning. My philosophy is that it takes a community to raise a child. Therefore I value and appreciate input and contributions from our families and other influential people in our children’s lives.
It’s incredible seeing the children become independent beings forming friendships, learning new skills and experiencing beautiful moments together.
I encourage family participation and welcome engagement and collaboration in the program with our open-door policy. We have experienced many magical moments within our Centre, and I can’t wait to share this journey with you and your family.
I feel privileged to work in such a great environment here at Petit ELJ Caloundra, where I know that I am making a difference to the lives of children and their families.

Caloundra Kindergarten Program
Enrol your child in a Kindergarten Program today to encourage a smooth transition and school readiness!
There is a strong focus on children’s social and emotional development to ensure that each child has the skills to become active and confident learners as they move onto school.
Here at Petit ELJ Caloundra, we run a play-based program that stems from the children’s interests, strengths and needs.
We have a keen interest in the importance of families in the children’s kindergarten experience, and we work to nurture the link between home and kindergarten with all the families we meet. We are excited to share with you the learning of your child, and we look forward to the shared experiences of play and fun that we have in each session.
Petit ELJ Caloundra Kindergarten Teacher Profile
Douglas ArnoldEarly Childhood Teacher
I have been working in early childhood for 10 years and have a BA (Hons) Professional Studies in Education with Advanced Studies of Early Years.
My role as a teacher is to create an environment in which children experience excitement, motivation and challenge. Supporting and guiding children on their learning journeys to maximise their full potential.
For the children in our program, we aim to instil the dispositions for learning that will support them through their educational journeys. The children must have strong foundations to build upon that they can later apply to academia. One of the main areas we support the children with is developing their personal, social and emotional development.
School readiness involves children starting school with a toolkit of different approaches to learning that includes: their health and physical well-being; language and communication development; social and emotional development; and cognitive and general knowledge. During their time in our Kindergarten program, we help the children develop the different tools and strategies that they need to ensure they have a successful transition into the school system.
I chose to specialise in the Early Years because this was where I felt I could make the most significant difference in positively shaping children.
Benefits of attending a Petit ELJ Kindergarten or Preschool Program
Our qualified early childhood teachers guide children through the learning journey that provides the foundation for a successful transition to school and that aligns with the EYLF that ‘all children experience learning that is engaging and builds success for life’.
Through participation in our evidence-based pedagogy program which include elements of play-based, inquiry-based and project-based learning, children are encouraged to investigate and explore materials and ideas through play and purposeful interactions.

- Independence and perseverance are encouraged and nurtured.
- Learn to show respect for diversity and their environment.
- Build a sense of autonomy and explore ways to be healthy and safe.
- Develop confidence and involvement in their learning journey.

Jackson has been attending Petit ELJ Caloundra since early July and he loves it, as do I. From day one, Jackson has always had a smile on his face when I drop him off for the day and it’s always an effort to get him out to the car because he never wants to leave. He adores the centre manager and his teacher Miss Nicole. He has come leaps and bounds since starting at Petit.

When we talk about resilience training in child care, the focus is often on strengthening children’s wellbeing. The Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) frequently raises wellbeing as it is pivotal to experiencing belonging, being and becoming. Being resilient improves wellbeing. Beyond Blue describes resilience as “Doing well during or after an adverse event, or a […]
Learning through play occurs naturally through everyday experiences. Children learn by exploring, using their imagination and by making decisions often through trial and error. Play changes as children grow, and many different forms of play support children’s agency. Families can promote play by encouraging and participating in children’s play. Playing together is one of the […]
